Working days versus calendar days
A working day is any weekday that is not a public holiday. The gap between calendar days and working days is larger than people expect: a thirty day calendar month holds about twenty-one or twenty-two working days, and fewer across a holiday cluster.
This is why deadlines quoted in business days, common in government and legal contexts, need converting before you can put them on a calendar. Ten business days is two full weeks plus any holidays inside the window, not ten calendar days.
Which holidays the calculator uses
The optional holiday exclusion uses the eleven United States federal holidays: New Year's Day, Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth National Independence Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
It applies the standard observed-day rules: a holiday landing on a Saturday is observed the preceding Friday, and one landing on a Sunday is observed the following Monday. That matches when federal offices are actually closed, which is what a working day count is usually standing in for. If your relevant closures are state or organizational rather than federal, count with holidays off and adjust for your own calendar.
